The Noosa Triathlon Club has recently secured funding to run an initiative we are titling ‘Tri Fit Families’.
This program is being subsidized by grant funding from The Queensland State Government made available due to the upcoming Commonwealth Games and The Noosa Tri Club.

Noosa Triathlete Inc. is a not for profit sporting club that has the ability to help Queenslanders get and stay fit. Through professionally coached sessions and training events our goal is to introduce as many Queenslanders as possible to triathlon, a sport that allows you to enjoy all that living here has to offer and make lifelong friends in the process.

Thanks to the support of the Noosa Council and Queensland State Government and their objective of improving the health of Queensland women we have previously delivered a very successful women’s only training program. We are now seeking to expand on that and are calling for expressions of interest from women who would like to get fit alongside their teenage daughter or son, niece or grandchild etc. If you are interested in participating in this program or would like more information, complete your details here: Registration for Get Active program

We recognise the influence that a fit and active Mum or other female role model can have on a family and want to help encourage Queensland teenagers get involved in triathlon and by entering this program together we believe they will be able to encourage and motivate each other on the journey.

The 20 week program will include;

  • Professional assessment of current fitness and capability in the 3 activities of swim, bike, run
  • An eight week professionally coached training program
  • A subsequent 12 week personalised training program
  • Two 3 day training camps during the school holidays
  • Diet and nutrition workshops delivered by elite level professionals
  • Introduction to yoga classes
  • Multiple competitive training events where participants can put the found skills, ability and fitness together

Numbers will be limited to enable the best delivery of the initiative to the participants.

The program is valued at approximately $2000.00 per person in coaching / professional speaker fees and will provide a fantastic opportunity for families and in this instance a mother and child – (daughter / son) to participate as part of the program at their respective fitness levels.

Successful applicants will need to become members of the club and Triathlon Queensland for training and insurance purposes, but will receive the coaching free of charge.

Qualified Triathlon Australia Coaches will be Nick Croft and Jess Fleming. Nick is a 2 time Noosa Triathlon champion and winner of 35 evens as a professional, Australian Triathlete of the year, Triathlon Australia Ironman Coach of the year, former Triathlon Australia Elite Junior Program manager, former Triathlon QLD Community program Involvement Officer and current Noosa Tri Club Coach who has been coaching professionally for 23 years.

Jess became an age group champion while juggling motherhood and work, won several age titles in Ironman including second at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in 2013 in her age group before turning professional and mixing it at the highest level gaining several 2nd and 3rd places in Ironman events before winning her first pro race in Vietnam in 2016. Coaching now for 7 years, Jess is proof of how training progression works over several years, having started triathlon training in 2006 with the aim to keep fit and try a new challenge.

Our coaches will guide the program participants every step of the way and provide hands on coaching and instruction while ensuring the process remains enjoyable.

The program is planning to commence in the second half of October for the new season and the Noosa Triathlon Club will also be holding an open day at the Noosa Tri Club event in Noosa on Sunday 17th September where our Coaches will be there to discuss the program before it starts and give ample time to register participants and outline the initial 8 weeks hands on coaching program and initial induction.

FAQ’s

What experience / level of fitness do I need?
Ideally you’ll know how to ride a bike and swim basic free style, but not to high fitness ability/levels currently.

I am very unfit and not done much exercise for some time but are keen to participate. Can I still enrol?
Absolutely, this course is open for all levels of fitness/abilities.

Can my son be part of the program?
We welcome any gender aged 13 years and up.

Is there an age limit for mothers / children?
We would like to invite Year 7 for the kids and up there is no upper limit so even grandparents would be welcome.

I like the sound of doing some training but have never had swim instruction or been a swimmer?
Basic Swimming ability is all you need. You’ll be guided in a safe fun environment at the Noosa Aquatic centre and taught stroke technique and efficiency, gaining fitness and confidence as you go.

I don’t have a triathlon or road bike, can I still participate?
That is absolutely fine, a MTB or City bike would be a great starting point.

Will the riding be on the road?
We will primarily utilize Girraween Track which is a 900m purpose built cycling track, safe and free of cars. We will also use areas such as Gyndier Drive which is a 3km hill just outside of Tewantin which is also closed for cars and a wind trainer that transforms your standard bike into a stationary bike so is very coaching and beginner friendly.

What equipment would we need to commence the program?
A basic bike, running shoes, swimmers, goggles and swim Fins (flippers) as a starting point.

Will our fitness be monitored and measured as the program progresses?
Yes we will be using some basic tests and throughout the course with progression clearly marked as you develop.

Do we have to complete a triathlon as part of the program?
You don’t have to but you might find you want to. The Noosa Tri club offers monthly triathlons that would be a starting point plus there many enticer / shorter distance participation events dotted around the coast through the summer season but the local Noosa club is the perfect way to ease into the sport in a friendly environment

Will the program cost us anything?
The coaching content, attending the training camps, scheduled clinics on nutrition, wellbeing, body maintenance and yoga are all included free to participants. The cost of this package comes in at around $2000 value. The club do require you to become club members and this also entails joining Triathlon Australia for insurance purposes which will cost a combined $196.00 for an adult / $108.00 for a Junior aged 12-19 years – this is a membership till 30 June 2018. The Noosa Aquatic Centre will also charge a pool entry each time for swim squads as part of the pool training and this is $5.40 for an adult and $4.60 for a student entry.
